SAM CHILDERS  and his WEST COAST CHOPPER

Present:

AFRICA BIKE PROJECT

                                   Sam Childers

For the last decade Sam Childers, an avid biker, has been traveling to Sudan and Uganda in eastern Africa to bring relief to people in the crisis-laden area. Once a hardened criminal, Sam’s heart broke on his first trip to Sudan when he witnessed the unrelenting horrors of the war waged on the people there by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army). Sam knew he had to take action, so with nothing more than his faith, a mosquito net hanging from a tree and an AK-47, he began rescuing children to build an orphanage now known as the thriving Children’s Village.

Over the years Sam has become a trusted advocate of the democracy-seeking South Sudanese government.  Officials of the country have observed his dedicated service to the people in the country and have allowed him unprecedented access to aid war-torn regions.

The African Bike

The bike was built by Jesse James and West Coast Choppers. It has been given the name “The African Bike”. The bike was built for the children of Sudan and Darfur. All proceeds from the bike go directly too them. There has been 19 celebrities and Rock Stars that have signed the bike, with the signatures on the bike, the bikes value as of right now is $300,000.00. The bike is on a one year tour and is being raffled off for a $20 donation. The drawing will be June 27, 2009 in Johnstown, PA at thunder in the valley. The Orphanage

The staff at Sam’s Sudanese orphanage cares for nearly 300 children on the property daily. The orphanage is guarded around the clock by soldiers who will defend the children should the need arise.  It is important to note that Children’s Village is the only NGO (non-governmental organization) that does not pick up and leave when fighting breaks out in the area. As a result, the children have a more secure and stable environment to grow up in.  For these children, the Children’s Village represents hope in the darkest and most dire of situations.

Without the staff at the orphanage many of them would die of starvation or risk being abducted by the LRA and forced into being child soldiers.  Instead they have been given the opportunity to “become children again”, an ideal that guides the staff in their daily operations. In order to rebuild the stolen childhoods of these 300 little lives, Sam has built the only playground in all of South Sudan and is currently constructing three libraries on the property. He is also building an elementary school next to the compound. In addition to traditional schooling, Children who are of age are taught a trade and participate in the regional soccer league.

The Plane

The bush airplane will assist Sam and his staff in locating and rescuing refugees and orphans who are at the mercy of the conflict in the area. Because roads are in terrible conditions and ambushes are common, the airplane will be invaluable. Sam also plans to do food drops to victims of famine, drought and war.
